Join us in our journey to discover the inner workings and exciting news surrounding the world of science fiction films.
When you think of science fiction, what comes to your mind? Flying spaceships? Lasers? Lightsabers? All of these things would be accurate to science fiction, but they’re not all that the genre has to offer. Science fiction is a dramatically large genre, with even more subdivisions within the genre.
If you need to read up more on science fiction’s history and beginnings, I highly recommend looking here or here. I’m not here to discuss the background on science fiction, but rather to focus on one small yet large piece of the puzzle: films.
Films are only one part of sci-fi as a whole, but yet there is so much diversity found within this space. Star Wars and Star Trek are amongst the more well-known franchises, but there are many more.

And even more impressive than the large franchises are those smaller budget films that truly do something unique and unexpected. Standing out among the crowd of overdone cliches and nuances is hard to do, but it can be amazing when done correctly.
As we prepare to take a look into the future and past of science fiction films, I’m going to provide a list of some of the best science fiction movies, as determined by Rotten Tomatoes, here. This list is by no means the ONLY films in the genre you need to watch, but it provides a good list of movies to watch if you want to gather an idea of what the space can look like. Some of them are cult classics, which will be featured in the specialty segment “Back to the Past” (yes, it is an attempt at a play on Back to the Future).
Others are newer releases that have solidified themselves as good contenders. Here at the Final Frontier, we take a look at all of the entries-no matter how big or small of a studio produced them. So be sure to keep an eye out for news, reviews, and a look into the past of science fiction films.
Take care and safe travels!
